The Parent Teacher Student Association donated 40 new iMac computers to Mira Costa, which were installed on Nov. 1 in the Costa library.
The total cost of the iMacs was $54,000. According to Costa Principal Dr. Ben Dale, the computers were added as part of Costa’s goal of technological advancement.
“Costa needed new computers, and we were leaning toward PC’s because of the cost,” Dale said. “We are grateful to our PTSA for their incredible generosity and support that allowed us to buy the new iMacs.”
Costa Geek Squad members and band students assisted teacher librarian Jane Lofton with setting up the new iMacs.
“Our band class helped take the computers out of the boxes in the library,” sophomore Blake Smith said. “An informational technology (IT) man then installed the new computer software.”
The previous Dell computers were installed in 2006. Costa distributed the computers that are still functioning to classrooms throughout the school.
“The old computers were really slow,” junior Tyler Cathcart said. “The new computers will make work in the library much easier.”
Lofton believes the new computers are an important addition to the library.
“I have been happy to see so many students excited about their arrival,” Lofton said. “I am grateful for the funding.”
According to PTSA President Erika White, replacing the old computers has recently been on the PTSA agenda. It officially made the decision at the beginning of the fall semester.
“The PTSA felt that replacing old computers benefits all students, which is important when making expenditure decisions,” White said.
