Mira Costa girls volleyball faced Orange Lutheran High School on the road, on Thursday Nov. 8. After a first round CIF win against Mission Viejo High School, the Mustangs fell short to Orange Lutheran on Friday Nov.9 with a score of 3-2.

Despite losing the first game 22-25, Costa came back in the second game 25-18 with the help of senior Corie Bain who led the offense with 42 assists and 2 aces. The Mustangs also continued their momentum into the third game, winning 25-19.

“We had to shake off the first game and change what we were doing wrong in the beginning,” junior Sammy Furlan said. “We started fighting for every play and picked up our energy.”

In the fourth game, the Mustangs continued to battle with Orange Lutheran, but lost 21-25. Throughout the game, senior Grayce Campbell picked up the offense with 24 kills followed by senior Lexi Millington who had 11 kills.

“It was an extremely close game and we got the lead a couple of times,” Furlan said. “The energy of the Lutheran crowd was amazing so it was really difficult to play there.”

After losing the fourth game, the Mustangs came up short, losing the fifth game 18-20. The Mustangs tried to stay in the game with senior Carly Muller’s 20 digs and junior Brooke Feld’s 10 digs, however, it was not enough to win the match.

The Mustangs ended with a second place title in Bay League behind Redondo Union High School. Costa’s season is now over due to their second round loss in CIF. Costa’s overall record was 19-12 and their regular season record is 7-3.

“We fought hard to win the match, but we still came up a bit short,” coach Lisa-Arce Zimmerman said. “We overcame a hostile environment, but could not close the match in the fifth.”
