Throughout November and December the Mira Costa Model United Nations program traveled to regional and national conferences in San Francisco and Rhode Island where the program won a plethora of awards at both.
All grade levels of the advanced MUN team participated and debated in these travel conferences. A group of MUN students left for the Brown University conference on Nov 5. and returned on Nov. 10 after competing in a three day debate. The conference did not give out team awards, but individual Costa students won a total of six Best delegate awards or gavels, 12 Outstandings, and 12 Commendations.
“We did really well at Brown and about 83% of our group received recognition,” MUN advisor Robert Timberlake said. “We brought a very young group with only 7 seniors, so it was mostly a sophomore and junior group, but we still managed to win against our main competition.”
In late November, Costa debated at the Regional High School Model UN conference in San Francisco. With the majority of students that attended RHSMUN from Nov. 29 to Dec. 1 being sophomores, the conference served to train the less experienced underclassmen. Costa won the Award of Excellence, which translates to second place.
“RHSMUN was a great experience,” senior Ryanne Martucci said. “My sophomore partner and I did really well, and although there were not any individual awards, we still did well as a team.”
