The Mira Costa boys soccer team participated in the South Torrance High School Tournament on Dec. 20 through Dec. 22.

In the first game, the boys played against Torrance High School and won 2-0. On day two, the boys lost to Santa Barbara High School with a score of 1-0. In the last game of the tournament the boys played against Peninsula High School but lost 2-0.

“This tournament showed us how deep our team is,” senior Grant Southwood said. “We had some injured players and it was nice to see that we have other strong players who step up to take their spots.”

The boys played a home game on Thursday Jan. 3, against North Torrance High School and won 2-1.

Senior Travis Bradford scored Costa’s first goal off a penalty kick giving the Mustangs the lead. Bradford then assisted junior Sebastian Thomas, who scored Mira Costa’s second goal.

“We are playing better as a team now that pre-season is coming to an end,” Bradford said. “We are excited to start the season off well.”

The team participated in the annual Alumni Match on Saturday, Jan. 5 against previous Mira Costa boys soccer athletes and lost 2-0.

The varsity boys played in the first half against the alumni. They were not able to score any goals and let in one goal ending the half in a 1-0 deficit. In the second half, the Mira Costa junior varsity team played and were also not able to score. In addition, they let in another goal, bringing the final score of the game to 2-0 in the Alumni’s favor.

“The Alumni game is always a fun one,” Southwood said. “It’s nice to see your friends back from college and get the chance to play with them again.”

The boys next game will be on Tuesday, Jan. 8 against West Torrance. It will be the first Bay League game of the season.
