The Mira Costa Sax Herd won first place at Associated Student Body’s 2013 Mira Costa High School Talent Show on Jan. 31 in the Costa auditorium.
The Herd consists of sophomores Sam Kartub and Derek Zeoli, junior Josh Block and seniors JT Babbe, Lucas Stinchcombe, Jackson Webster and Brian Zukotynski. Junior Tony Nguyen and sophomore Jon Sullivan placed second for their performance of “Opportunity,” and senior Chris Vu won third place for playing an original song on the piano.
“For us, it was about having fun,” Block said. “Winning was cool, but our goal was just to put on a good show.”
This year’s talent show showcased 22 acts that included vocal, guitar, saxophone, dance, piano performances and more.
“The talent show always has some great performers,” junior Sejal Asher said. “This year’s show was especially amazing.”
ASB chose the acts for this year’s show after holding auditions on Jan. 8 and 9.
Because Talent Show auditions conflicted with the spring musical auditions, fewer students were able to try out.
“We had almost 50 people try out last year, but less than 30 tried out this year.” Costa Activities Director Lisa Claypoole said.
The three senior class officers, Mckenzie Becker, Mackenzie Emerson and Natalie Pratt, were in charge of planning this year’s show. The three finalized the list of acts, sold tickets at the student store and emceed the event.
“I’m proud of ASB for all of the work we did to put on the show,” Emerson said. “It’s great to see all of the talent Costa students have to offer.”
Costa students believe that the Talent Show was a success.
“There was a great turnout,” sophomore vice president Julia Brady said. “It was an amazing show with a range of talent.”
