The Mira Costa girls volleyball team faced off against Huntington Beach’s Edison High School in a non-league game but failed to emerge victorious. The Mustangs and the Edison Chargers competed on Thursday, September 9 in the Fisher Gym.
The Chargers just barely swept the Mustangs in three close games. During the first, Costa took an early lead. However, Edison caught up and surged ahead. Powerful hits from Costa, notably from seniors Emma White and Ella Rosenfeld, helped the team stay in the game. The Chargers won the first game with a close score of 25-23.
The second game initially appeared as if it would mirror the first game; Edison took the lead with Costa trailing closely behind. Solid offense and organization helped the Mustangs take the lead at 13-12. Unfortunately, they were unable to maintain their lead. The Chargers regained control of the game and ended it with a score of 25-19.
Costa had a rough start in the third game. Edison quickly took a lead in the beginning of the game and held it while the Mustangs struggled to regain control of the game. The Mustangs were losing at 10-2, but the team came together and nearly recovered.
A powerful block from Rosenfeld put the score at 20-18. Edison still held the lead. Crucial attacks from White brought the score to 24-23. Unfortunately, the Mustangs were never able to completely recover and the game ended with Edison victorious at 25-23, putting Costa’s season record at 5-3.
The Mustangs will play again on Tuesday, September 14 in an away game against the Marymount High School Sailors.
