Following successful offseason training, the Mira Costa softball team finished third in the two-weekend Cypress Tournament.
The girls started the tournament on Feb. 23 against Warren High School and won, 9-5. Later that day, the Mustangs beat Irvine High School, 10-5, finishing the first day of the tournament.
“I am really proud of how we played in this tournament,” sophomore pitcher Dillan Boada said. “Our goal for this year is to continue to grow as a team and play our very best.”
Costa then travelled back to Cypress on Saturday to face Cypress High School in Costa’s first loss, 5-0. The girls then beat Long Beach Poly High School, 15-6, finishing in third place in the tournament.
“As a team we put in a lot of energy and hit really well during the Cypress game and made the adjustments our coaches gave us,” sophomore second baseman Brittany Werre said. “I think we could have done better in this tournament, but it’s the beginning of the season; I know we can improve our game.”
Werre had eight hits in 11 at bats during the tournament as well as two home runs. Senior center fielder Taylor Glover scored seven runs, and catcher Nikki Gialketsis scored three runs throughout the tournament. Sophomore Sammy Matson also scored two runs during the tournament.
“Even though we placed third in this tournament, I think we did pretty well,” senior outfielder Montana Hunter said.
The girls played Thursday at Buena Park at 3:30 p.m, but results were unavailable at the time of publication.
“I definitely want to see our team improve defensively and use our offensive skills to their full potential because we have a lot of powerful hitters that will help us go far,” Hunter said.
