In its first performance of the 2013 season, the Mira Costa Color Guard placed sixth out of seven teams on Saturday at the Riverside Invitational at Martin Luther King High School.

The Color Guard performed its show, titled “Spoon Your Way to Health,” based off the television sitcom “I Love Lucy”.

“I think for the amount of time we had to prepare for the competition we did really well,” Color Guard member senior Claire Darner said.

The team began preparing in mid-January. According to Darner, the team was unable to perform to its full potential because the “I Love Lucy”-inspired uniforms were not ready. Color Guard hopes to improve and is looking forward to finishing and perfecting its show.

“This year, we recruited more people from junior varsity,” Color Guard member junior Ryan Kuresa said. “We had to go over a lot of weapon basics and technique in order for them to be prepared.”

The team’s next competition will be on March 16 at Bellflower High School.

“Our performance was not our best, but this just shows us that we have to work harder,” co-captain junior Chelsea Williams said.
