With the arrival of spring sports season, the Mira Costa baseball team has been training for the start of the season but they have also been getting ready for an annual event that head coach, Cassidy Olson, started four years ago.
The Mustangs get involved in the community by hosting a game once a year for children with special needs and other challenges.
“My favorite part about getting involved in this program is seeing how much fun all the kids have playing baseball with their classmates and the giant smiles it brings to all their faces,” junior Ryan Corral said. “It’s a very humbling experience and a safe environment for the kids to have fun without worrying about anything else going on in their lives.”
The kids receive Mira Costa baseball gear including t-shirts and uniforms that they wear during the scrimmage games as the varsity players help make it a fun day. Olson started this program years ago when he first became the coach of the varsity baseball team. Many of the children from the Friendship circle club attend this event as well as other children with special needs.
“After being part of this experience for the past couple of years, my teammates and I have learned how great it is to give back and we enjoy doing this for the kids especially since it’s not something we normally get to do on a daily basis,” senior Chris Alcala said. “It’s great to get to know each of the kids and see them have a great time out on field, they truly remind us how fun the sport is and why we love playing it.”
Throughout the day the Mustangs teach the kids some basic fundamentals of baseball and are able to interact alongside one another so they can all help each other learn the game. The players also incorporate drills and activities for the kids about the different aspects of baseball including some exercises for hitting and fielding the ball as well as running the bases.
“I love getting to see all the kids get into the game, as they field each ground ball filled with such determination and excitement,” senior Austin Henning said. “Just for them to be able to put aside anything that is bringing them down, even if its only for the few hours that they’re out there, it’s all worth it to see them happy.”
The time the children are able to spend with the baseball players is very beneficial for them because it is great exposure to sports and a chance for the kids to develop more confidence as well, while gaining a bigger interest in the activity.
“I look forward to this event because It’s fun encouraging the kids to run or take an extra base knowing you will be rewarded with their smiles, showing how proud they are to be out there,” sophomore Michael Rumpp said. “The kids teach us not to be so serious with baseball, that it’s okay to relax and have fun with the game so we all agree it’s a day well spent with these kids.”
