The Mira Costa boys volleyball team continued its success as reigning CIF champions and is now currently undefeated in Bay League.
The Mustangs were able to secure their second Bay League win of the season on March 21 against Palos Verdes Peninsula High School. The boys won the match in a three-game sweep with scores of 25-19, 25-16 and 25-17.
Junior middle blocker Connor Inlow led the team with 11 kills. Senior outside hitter Casey White followed with 10 kills, while senior middle blocker Miles Johnson and sophomore outside hitter Blake Markland each had five.
“It was a great sweep for us, and we all played really well,” Inlow said. “It was a great confidence builder both individually and as a team.”
The teams were evenly matched for the first half of the first game with the lead shifting back and forth, but Costa scored 15 points, securing the Mustangs the lead over Peninsula to finish the game 25-19.
“For the first half of the game we played at [Peninsula’s] level,” senior outside hitter Riley Mallon said. “In the second half we stepped up and controlled the match.”
Throughout the second game the starters were switched out with second-string players. The game started off shaky with the Mustangs struggling to gain a lead, but Costa managed to take the game 25-16. The boys managed to win the third game with second-string as well, finishing at 25-17.
“It’s always a lot of fun getting other guys on the court,” Markland said. “It helps us develop players that are not always starting.”
The boys’ next game took place yesterday, but results were unavailable due to time of publication. During Spring Break, the team will travel to Hawaii to play against Punahou High School and Kamehameha High School.
“It’s always good when our entire team gets to play,” White said. “It’s great experience and gives us a more united feeling.”
