With first place in Bay League on the line, the Mira Costa baseball team needed a win. But on Wednesday, the team lost 3-2 to Redondo Union High School.

Costa is now tied with Redondo for first place in League with a record of 5-2. Senior Gordon Cardenas pitched the whole game, but the offense did not come alive until the sixth inning.

“We started off slow,” senior right fielder Garrett Wells said. “Going into today’s game we need to begin the game, as strong as we end it. If we do that then, hopefully, the game on Friday will not be as close.”

Redondo scored three runs in the first and second innings, but the Mustangs did not allow any other runs throughout the rest of the game.

With the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth inning, senior shortstop Jack Hadley hit a double, scoring the only two runs for Costa. Hadley went 2-for-3 in the loss.

“We played a great second half,” coach Cassidy Olson said. “We came out flat, even though we only let in three runs. We need to learn how to come back from that.”

Senior left fielder Kevin Lopez came up to bat with two outs in the bottom of the seventh and hit a line drive, but the Seahawk’s right fielder made a diving catch to end the inning and win the game.

“Going into my last at bat I tried not to think too much,” Lopez said. “Redondo’s right fielder made a great catch, but that’s just how baseball goes.”

The Mustangs will face the Seahawks again today at Redondo Union High School at 3 p.m.

“In Friday’s game, we need to come out with more energy,” senior center fielder Keyon Allen said. “We overlooked Redondo offensively, and we cannot do that again today.”
