Fighting to gain control of first place in Bay League, the Mira Costa softball team beat Leuzinger High School in an away game on Wednesday for the second time this season. The girls are currently tied for first place in Bay League with rival Redondo Union High School.

The Mustangs beat Leuzinger 17-0 and mercied the Olympains after the fifth inning. The girls now have an 18-6-1 record overall for the season and a 6-1 record in Bay League.

“My team and I played like we always do, which is assertively from the beginning and keeping the energy through the game until the end,” sophomore designated hitter Ulufa Lailua said. “Every game we have been improving, and I am really proud of how our team has come together so far this season.”

Lailua went 2-for-2 and hit a home run to help with Costa’s victory. Senior center fielder Taylor Glover also went 2-for-2 with a double and three runs scored. Senior outfielder Ali Timmons went 1-for-1 with a double. The Mustangs led 12-0 after the top of the first inning.

“I think that since the beginning of the season, our team has progressed in terms of working together as a team,” Glover said. “In this game, I think we did what we had to in order to come out on top with the win.”

Sophomore pitcher Dillan Boada pitched the first three innings and went 1-for-2 while freshman pitcher Haley Marschall closed the game and went 1-for-1.

“Our team played very strong against Leuzinger,” Boada said. “Our defense was solid, and our offense hit really well too. We have grown a lot as a team since the beginning, and we continue to grow closer and more in-sync on and off the field.”

The girls next face West Torrance High School for the second time this season in an away game today at West at 3:15 p.m.

“After having some rough games and a couple of eye-openers last week, I think we really improved as a team against Leuzinger today,” sophomore second baseman Brittany Werre said. “Everyone played great, and it was a total team effort. Now we just need to work on defending our spot in the Bay League and beat West Torrance this Friday.”
