Mira Costa honored several students at the 2013 Scholar Breakfast on April 16, organized by Associated Student Body.
Costa teachers each nominated a student to acknowledge their excellence in academics or citizenship. Forty “club scholars” were also awarded for their excellence in academics along with being an active member in a club on campus.
“The students being honored at the Scholar Breakfast have made learning and achieving a priority in their lives,” Manhattan Beach Unified School District Superintendant Dr. Michael Matthews said. “I love the Scholar Breakfast, as it is a great way to honor our students’ high achievement.”
ASB Commissioner of Campus Welfare, Ben Sands, and ASB Vice President, Rachel Humphrey, opened the ceremony.
Dr. Ben Dale continued with the Scholar Breakfast Address and Vice Principal Deborah Hofreiter presented the certificates of achievement. ASB Auxiliary of Campus Welfare, Grace Greenspon, along with other ASB members, concluded the ceremony with raffle prizes.
“I thought ASB did a nice job putting together the breakfast,” honoree sophomore Matthew O’Brien said. “Sometimes ceremonies like these can drag out and seem long, but was fun and entertaining with a short break from reading names with raffle prizes.”
Teachers of both academic and elective classes nominated students; giving all students a chance to be recognized.
“I was nominated for the Scholar Breakfast by my art teacher,” freshman Kiera Isgrig said. “There aren’t many opportunities for art students to be awarded so I like the fact that students can be nominated by any teacher regardless of the class subject.”
Many administrators see the annual Scholar Breakfast as one of Costa’s most notable traditions.
“I love the sense of tradition in the breakfast,” Matthews said. “It’s old fashioned, and goes back to what generations of students before have experienced.”
