With the end of the season nearing, the Mustangs stayed strong and were victorious in their first round of CIF.

The Mira Costa boys varsity tennis team defeated San Marcos High School 17-1 at home in the first round of the CIF playoffs on Wednesday, May 8.

“It is great making any progress in CIF,” sophomore Jason Wu said. “But starting out with a nearly flawless win is incredible.”

In singles, sophomore Evan Han and freshman Alex Gaal both won all three of their matches. In doubles, the Mustangs took every match.

“The match was really a total team effort and everybody played really well,” coach Joe Ciasulli said. “When you dominate a team the way our players did, it’s hard to single out one particular performance.”

The Mustangs progress in CIF is already an improvement over their performance last season. In 2012, the Mira Costa tennis team lost in their first CIF match.

“We had a rough season last year,” Wu said. “Any progress is good progress and we super excited to be making it somewhere in CIF.”

This win continues the Mustangs nearly undefeated season. Their triumph over San Marcos results in the Mustangs record being 18-3.

“We have done an outstanding job this season,” Wu said. “Everyone has been working really hard and we have had some outstanding freshman.”

The Mustangs next match is on Friday, May 10, away against Mariana High School.

“If we play the same way on Friday, we will defeat Marina and move on to the quarterfinals,” Ciasulli said. Since I’ve been coaching tennis, I’ve only had one other boys team that has made it as far as the quarterfinals. Making it to the quarterfinals of Division 1, the toughest high tennis division in the country, would be a tremendous accomplishment.”
