Mira Costa students often crave something delicious and filling after school. Savory n Sweets is a new bakery located between Costa and Pacific Coast Highway that offers students an inexpensive and tasty place for an after-school snack.
On May 6, Manhattan Beach residentCatherine Wojick opened her bakery that offers a variety of baked goods such as sandwiches, cupcakes and brownies.
“The blondies are definitely my most popular item,” Wojick said. “I always have to make sure that I make multiple batches because I sell out of them so quickly.”
Savory n Sweets is also an eco-friendly business. Instead of using paper plates and plastic forks, Wojick uses trays and wooden forks. Wojick also uses biodegradable cupcake wrappers.
“I make sure that I buy organic food as often as I can in order to ensure that I am selling the best quality food,” Wojick said.
Wojick began selling her baked goods 23 years ago when she had her first child. She started selling her items locally to earn some extra money to support her growing family. When Wojick’s husband was stationed in Afghanistan in December 2011 for seven months, she decided she wanted to do something creative with her time.
“Previously, I worked as a mechanical engineer, but when my husband was deployed I decided I wanted to take my baking to the next level,” Wojick said.
Wojick’s daughters, sophomores Reed and Regan Wojick, attend Mira Costa. Because of this, Catherine Wojick understands the importance of giving back to her community. In addition to her student-friendly prices, Wojick will also offer fundraising opportunities to Costa clubs.
“Our family likes to give back to the school, and I hope that my business will help with that,” Catherine Wojick said.
Catherine Wojick knows that starting a business is a risk, but she hopes that in the future her business will continue to grow in popularity. Savory n Sweets is open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sundays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and is located at 1208 Artesia Boulevard.
“I know that my mom will be successful in whatever she does,” Reed Wojick said. “I want her to be happy and help her develop her business.”
