Many strive to get a laugh out of others, but few can imagine the fear of performing in front of a crowd. Performing improv is difficult in an intimidating situation, but doing so is even more difficult when competing against one’s parents.
Mira Costa’s ComedySportz members competed for laughs against their own parents at the ComedySportz’s Parent Match on May 10. Students of the ComedySportz team played short-form improv games against parents, forcing them to think on their feet.
“The parent match is unique in that we get to see the difference in humor from generation to generation,” junior Gabby Wolf said.
Parents braved the audience in order to compete with their kids. In both rounds of competition, comprised of a total of 12 improv games, the student teams won overall, led by seniors Zack Gill, Buster Baer and Ari Howorth.
“Working with my mom was fun because she got to see all the work we put into our shows and how much effort it takes to make our events successful,” sophomore Armance Sherman said.
Depite the fact the parents lost the match to their children, they still maintained a positive attitude throughout the competition.
“I was excited that Ari asked me to be in the match, but it was really scary,” Amy Howorth said. “The kids practice really hard all year and develop that improv muscle, and we just jumped in with few a rehearsals.”
In addition to schoolwork and other extracurricular activities, students on the ComedySportz team are committed to practicing frequently and learning a variety of improv games.
“We have practices twice a week,” ComedySportz co-manager Molly Curtis said. “I loved attending the parent student match. All of the performers worked hard. I am proud of all who participated.”
