Last summer, sophomore wrestler Michael Cervantes joined the program “Crossfit” to maintain a healthy fitness routine for his upcoming wrestling season.
Crossfit is a fitness program that was started by Greg Glassman in 2000 and has over 5,500 gyms around the world. This program was created to make athletes physically stronger and to improve their competitive mentality. Cervantes trains at the
Crossfit gym located in Torrance for six hours a week.
“Crossfit made it easy for me to compete in varsity matches,” Cervantes said. “I was confident going into the season with this added practice.”
Cervantes’ teammates on the wrestling team also noticed a big change in his performance from last season. Cervantes was one of 11 wrestlers from the team that qualified for CIF this year. With a record of 26-8 for the season, Cervantes went undefeated in the freshman sophomore division.
“Michael was more conditioned than last year and easily faced bigger competitors during the season,” teammate sophomore Lars Cameron said.
At the Bay League finals on Feb. 2, Cervantes placed 2nd in the 120 lbs division, which guaranteed him his spot in CIF. Although he did not advance pass the first round, he has greatly improved and made it farther than previous years.
“Crossfit is a great experience for all athletes,” Cervantes said. “I will train more this summer.”
