Seniors Christian Koppel and Brooke Winterhalder won prom king and queen at Mira Costa’s 2013 prom on June 8 at the Belasco Theater in Los Angeles, and juniors Kai Frank and Talia Fragner won duke and duchess.
Koppel and Winterhalder received crowns, sashes and celebrated with an honorary dance.
“It was such an honor to be chosen as prom queen by my peers and a great way to end my last year,” Winterhalder said.
Associated Student Body members, headed by juniors Mandy McKeegan, Lia Sepanek and Makena McCaroll, selected “Cirque du Costa” as the prom theme, which was inspired by “Cirque du Soleil.”
“Cirque du Costa” was nicely executed, and the venue complemented the theme nicely,” junior Lynn Wang said.
Stilt walkers, a tarot card reader, and aerial art experts performed skills in various rooms of the venue.
“The Cirque theme was displayed in so many creative ways,” ASB treasurer junior Kirk La said. “ASB included classic prom attractions like a casino, caricatures, and photo booths.”
Federic and Edward Belasco built the Belasco Theater in 1926 and featured plays until 1987, when the building was sold. Since then, the theater has been available for various movies, television shows and private events.
“It was a great location,” junior Alec Hoffman said. “There were a lot of places where we could hang out and relax. The venue even had a live blues band in the basement we could listen to.”
Next year’s prom will take place at the Park Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles.
“It is an equally gorgeous venue as this year’s,” Activities Director Lisa Claypoole said. “It has an older Hollywood look and over 50 movies have been filmed there.”
