A City of Manhattan Beach Public Works employee discovered a dead body in a heap of manure on the 1500 block of Peck Avenue Thursday afternoon around 3:30 p.m.

Homicide detectives on the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and the Manhattan Beach Police Department are investigating the scene. Hovering helicopters’ aerial footage shows a white body bag among the pile of manure near Begg fields.

LASD Lieutenant Dave Coleman stated that the body is decayed and is being investigated as foul play. Friday morning, the body was identified as a hispanic male, but no other details have been released. An autopsy of the body is expected to be performed on Sunday.

“It’s very early so we haven’t done much yet with the scene,” Coleman said in a press release. “We are interviewing park workers and city employees as much as we can right now. All we know right now is that there is a body wrapped up in some materials that was left on top of a pile of fertilizer.”

The area of investigation will be closed for the next 48 hours. If any suspicious behavior was seen around the site, investigators would like anyone to report it to Manhattan Beach Police or contact the LASD tip line at 323-890-5500.

“We will document the scene as much as we can during the daylight hours,” Coleman said. “Later in the evening, the coroner will be called and they will remove the body, intact, as it is, and take it to the coroner’s office where we can carefully take the materials off the body and investigate further.”
