Elections for the ASB student government board and class officers for the next school year took place April 23, during which new procedures were implemented.

Elections for commissioner positions as well as interviews for auxiliary positions will take place in the upcoming month.

The positions of ASB president, vice president and secretary went to juniors Iktae Park, Sierra Bloodgood and Sophie Everhard, respectively.

“I think that Iktae will be a really committed president. He embodies the spirits of all our students, and I’m confident that he will live up to our expectations,” junior Victoria Southwood said.

Candidates campaigned during the week of April 19 and results were announced on April 23.

“Anyone was able to run to be a class officer, but you had to have been previously a member of student government to be on the board,” Student Activities Director Lisa Claypoole said.

In order to make the election process run smoothly and increase participation, elections were held during homeroom period.

Because voting used to occur during lunch, many students did not vote in earlier elections.

“With the utilization of homerooms, this election became a great opportunity for the students to actually partake in our democratic procedure,” Park said.

Changes for choosing auxiliary and commissioner positions will also be implemented.

“This year we will hold interviews for the auxiliary positions and elections for the commissioner positions. We decided to do it  because too many people ran unopposed,” Commissioner of Elections senior Kari Shannon said.

The process for choosing auxiliaries will begin with a mandatory meeting for interested students on May 4.

“To join student government next year, you need to have a 3.0 GPA and no disciplinary offenses.  You should also be spirited and be willing to be crazy because we have a lot of fun,” Shannon said.
