The administration’s decision to hold off on selling parking passes to some students was completely justified, as it helped to prevent a potential issue with parking spaces.
Parking passes give students access to the student parking lot, and are therefore a highly demanded commodity. Passes become available in the spring, and those students who are faster at signing up, are more likely to get a pass. This year about 150 of the usual 200 passes were given out.
Students were placed on a list, and only around 200 of the first students to sign up were eligible to get a pass. This means that those who were eligible were the people who cared most about getting a pass. If they did not receive them, they would be the students most affected.
Due to the construction Mira Costa is undergoing, some of the parking lots were affected and less spots than expected were available. Because of this, the administration made the best decision by waiting to give all of the students their parking passes, until they could be sure that the teachers had space to park.
When some of the eligible students went to go purchase their passes at registration, after being informed that they would be available, the students who were told they would be contacted at a later date, at which time they would be allowed to purchase a pass.
However, this worried these students. This was a small inconvenience that was handled well. The problem has since been solved, since the attendance office has been given the all clear to continue selling the passes, until the conventional limit of 200 has been reached.
This scenario is not likely to appear again, because the problem was caused by the construction, which should be completed by the end of the year. So for now, the problem is resolved, and is not likely to happen again in the future. However, if it should happen, the administration should keep their priorities and ensure that the teachers and staff are cared for. Those who think that the administration is at fault are just wrong. The administration at our school should take no blame for this. They were merely doing what was necessary, as our teachers have to take the priority in this situation.
Students can find other alternatives to parking without being affected, or merely take a carpool, but teachers and staff deserve to have somewhere to go park. Mira Costa’s administration was right to put them first and give parking passes to students at a later date.
In this situation the administration made the right decision, to support the teachers, and, although it may have been delayed, give students all available parking passes. This was the best choice that could have been made, and it all worked out in the end.
