Final plans for a future campus design were discussed by school board members, Costa administrators and members of the community on Oct. 1 in the cafeteria for the last of four bond BB campus design workshop meetings.
A master plan for the campus’ design has been nearly completed and is now beginning approval.
“This plan is going to be so beneficial to the students of this school, with a new quad, a new math and science building, and renovated rooms to meet today’s technology,” Principal Julie Ruisinger said.
A new two-story math and science building will be built on the upper Peck parking lot. This building will include rooms and labs for science. Three solar panels will be mounted on the roof, surrounded by a garden.
“The new math and science building will be great because, instead of doing construction in the 40-70’s hall, right in the middle of the school, there will be no disruption to the students and teachers will only have to move once,” Ruisiger said.
There will be a parking lot built on the Meadows Avenue side of the school, an area currently used for English as a Second Language classrooms. The lot could be done by the end of next summer.
“It will be nice to have a new parking lot located there because of traffic problems in the morning on that side of the school, and teams that are playing against Mira Costa can park there and have an easier entrance,” school board President Nancy Hersman said.
A new quad will replace the old administration building and rooms 35-39, 49, and 49B. The new quad will include a small building where students can buy snack and lunch, an amphitheatre and the Associated Student Body room, which may be moved to the 49-45 row.
“I feel that the new quad would allow more student interactions. Also, ASB could possible benefit from the quad and a new room,” freshman Braden Casady said.
The band and choir rooms will move to the renovated classrooms on the southeastern end of school, next to a new multipurpose room which will be built.
Additionally, media arts classes such as yearbook and La Vista will move to the maintenance building. Maintenance will be moved to the far south end.
The approval process will start with a final census that has been taken by the architects. Once the campus plans are finished, the architects will present the plans to the school board in November, at which point the board will vote whether to approve the plans.
“We are not allowed to talk about the plans with each other, but it seems like there is a good feeling of the plans so far on the board,” Hersman said.
