In their fourth game of the season, varsity boys water polo defeated Montebello High School on Thursday, with a 16-9 win.
Costa started strong with one goal by senior driver Austin Norris followed by another goal by junior perimeter player Jeon Edward. Costa scored again and Montebello responded with two goals. Costa scored once more, making the score 4-2.
During the second period, Norris swam the length of the pool and, within the last couple of feet, passed the ball to perimeter player Andrew Todd who then assisted a goal by senior set Andrew Burdiak.
The Mustangs scored six more goals by the end of the third period while Montebello had a total of five.
Costa scored first during the fourth period but Montebello struck back with three goals in a row. Then, Norris and senior perimeter player Drew Rogerson scored two more goals. Montebello had the last goal of the game, but Costa came out victorious in the end.
“It’s interesting to watch these boys play because they are all from different teams outside of school,” spectator Patricia Koester said. “But when they come together to play for their school, it’s really amazing to see their teamwork and progress.”
The boys have their next home game, against Peninsula, on Tuesday.
