Costa seniors voted seniors Kirk La and Mandy Mckeegan as the 2013 Homecoming king and queen, respectively, at the Oct. 11 Homecoming football game.
Mira Costa clubs and organizations originally nominated representatives from their programs for the court. Upperclassmen then voted for the 12 court members, which included the winners.
“I was extremely surprised and ecstatic when I found out I had won Homecoming king,” La said. “Being on Homecoming court was a busy but fulfilling, experience. I had a great time dressing up and rehearsing the dance we had to come up with for the rally with the other court members.”
In the week leading up to the Homecoming game, the nominees participated in spirit week activities such as themed dress up days and games during lunch, including scavenger hunts and blindfolded partner challenges.
“The challenges were fun because we were watching each other do embarrassing things,” McKeegan said. “What made it better was that we were all dressed up in our ridiculous costumes doing random things, so it was pretty entertaining.”
ASB also organized themed dress up days for the student body. The spirit days included pajama Thursday, U.S.A. Tuesday, college or professional sports day Wednesday, Hawaiian Day Thursday and Stampede Friday.
“I think that this year’s Spirit Week was really successful,” senior Robyn Naidoo said. “Compared to last year, there was a huge increase in the number of people who dressed up everyday, and it made Spirit Week more fun.”
On the day of the game, ASB put together a pep rally for Costa students. Both students and teachers participated in a relay race, the dance and cheer team performed and the Homecoming court performed a dance routine that its choreographed.
“It was such a great feeling knowing that after all the hard work we had done, it finally paid off and we did such a great job,” Homecoming princess senior Shauna Yates said.
The Homecoming dance, themed “Tiki Fever,” took place on Oct. 12, the night after the football game, in Fisher Gymnasium. ASB honored the court members by playing the Homecoming video, made by Chloe Weiss and Wesley Smart of Mustang Morning News, which featured each nominated couple.
“I think Homecoming was very successful,” Activities Director Lisa Claypoole said. “For the first time ever we ended the Homecoming show with time to spare. We often run overtime. I think the Homecoming show was tremendously successful in that the crowd really enjoyed it.”
