For the first time, Costa’s Vocal Ensemble and Advanced Women’s Chorale are submitting tapes of their performances to the Southern California Local Vocals Contest this month for the chance to be on Classical KUSC Radio in January.

This year, Classical KUSC Radio has decided to allow Southern California high schools to send in two recordings of their choirs. The contestants’ videos will be put online, where listeners can vote for the finalists in November.

“I think that it would be so much fun to get one of our choirs on a national public radio program,” Choir Director Michael Hayden said.

The Advanced Women’s Chorale will be singing “Crossing The Bar” by Gweneth Walker and “Ouvre Ton Coeur,” a French aria. Vocal Ensemble will be recording two selections by Johannes Brahms from a collection called “Zigeunerlieder.”

“I tried to pick songs that are fun, bright and can be accompanied with ease,” Hayden said.

KUSC on Dec. 2 will post the winners on their website.

“We are devoting all of our class time now trying to perfect the songs,” junior Advanced Women Chorale member McKay Gillette said.
