After a slow start, girls volleyball beat Peninsula High School on Tuesday in four sets.
Senior setter Sammy Furlan helped her team with 31 assists. Costa played aggressively in the first half, with four kills by junior middle blocker Katie Rethmeyer. Costa won the first set, 25-15.
“We had a rough start, but we came together,” junior outside hitter Katrina Kernochan said.
In the second set, Kernochan and junior outside hitter Skylar Caputo had strong performances, with four kills each. The team won the second set, 25-15.
Costa fell apart during the third set, allowing Peninsula to gain an advantage. Costa was unable to recover. Peninsula won, 26-24.
“After the third set, we changed our setting, which changed the pace for the rest of the game,” Rethmeyer said.
Costa came out strong in the fourth set. Furlan helped her team gain a quick lead, with 11 assists. Costa defeated the Panthers with a score of 25-12.
“We were not as focused as I had hoped, but we played well,” coach Lisa Zimmerman said.
Senior libero Brooke Feld had 19 digs, and Caputo had 17 kills.
Costa will play Redondo Union High School on Thursday and the game will be televised by Time Warner Cable.
