Since her first album release in 1999, Britney Spears has been a constant star in the media, in both good and bad ways. Britney is trying to make a comeback with the release of her new singles, but she is not doing a very good job of it.
At age 31, Britney Spears is still releasing dance songs that have caught everyone’s ears. With her recent release of her singles “Ooh La La” and “Work”, Spears channels her inner teen popstar. Although catchy, many of Britney’s listeners believe her to be trying too hard to act young. Britney may look the exact same as she did ten years ago, but she certainly isn’t the same age.
“Work” is a song dedicated to telling women to work for what they want, and although it has a good message, it is an incredibly repetitive song consisting of few meaningful lyrics and one long, albeit catchy chorus. The song has a lot of foul language that can be considered demeaning to women, but Britney acts as these words are terms of empowerment for women, telling them to stand up and work for the things they want in life. Britney degrades women while trying to stay hip with her language and reference to popular dream lifestyles, leaving her to exist as yet another older pop star attempting to make it in the modern day music industry.
With all the electronic music taking the stage in the music industry lately, Britney undoubtedly had to incorporate some sort of electronic pop into her latest single. Spears may have gone a little too far as every beat is electronic, compared to her past songs which had beats as well as passionate singing. Many people enjoy the modernized Britney songs, but other feel if Britney takes over pop again, she should bring back the original twist on songs she used to wow audiences with. Britney’s attempt at modernizing her work failed miserably as she is much too old to try and revamp her style of music.
The music video for “Work” is the same as every other Britney video; a scantily clad team of dancing women surrounding Britney as she dances in different areas of a stage or scene. The “Work” video has no special aspects to it, and will most likely just blend into another montage of Britney videos from the past. Britney’s video has a lot of simplistic dancing, without a lot of rigorous or entertaining choreography. The random scenes and settings have no correlation to the song, and they are probably just put in for visual pleasure. Many music videos have some sort of symbolization pertaining to the song, but the “Work” video is just another random dancing video by another pop star.
With over 2 million views in a few short hours, Britney’s video certainly had anticipation leading up to it as fans waited to see what the famous, and sometimes infamous, Spears would release into the world next.
With new tour dates released, including shows in Las Vegas, and an upcoming album, Britney Spears is desperately trying to make a comeback, but she is just not up to date with today’s style. Her attempts at modernizing her music style did not succeed as she desperately tried to regain her top position.
