After the end of a successful season, the girls tennis team transitioned into the first round of the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) playoffs against Louisville High School.
The girls defeated Louisville, 16-2, after completing their season with an overall record of 16-3 and 6-2 in Bay League.
In the first round, Costa won all of its matches. Singles player junior Brooke Swallow played against Louisville freshman Nicole Anthony, 6-0. The doubles team of senior Paula Cenusa and junior Mai Nojima won, 6-0, to continue the Mustangs’ undefeated round.
“I thought our match went well,” Cenusa said. “The girls we played matched up against us well, but we were still able to stay undefeated.”
The doubles team of senior Sidney Ascher with freshman Madi Giese played in a close match against Louisville juniors Jessica Chatfield and Sagonia Lazarof. Ascher and Giese struggled in the beginning, but came back to win 7-5.
“In our first match, we were struggling and couldn’t close,” Giese said. “But we came together in the end.”
The second round began with a win from Ascher and Giese, 6-2, followed by another win from Cenusa and Nojima. Singles player freshman Amy Gaal defeated Anthony, 6-0. The Draskovic twins defeated Louisville doubles team of senior Christine Bradshaw and junior Delaney McNulty to continue a winning streak over Louisville.
“We thought Costa played really well,” McNulty said. “The freshmen we played had a lot of winners.”
After 11 wins and one loss, Costa changed the lineup in the third round. Singles player junior Taylor Klein came back after a 6-3 loss in the second round against Louisville sophomore Larkin Woodward to win 6-1 against Anthony. Seniors Jill Sternthal and Christine Nwokedi had success with a 6-1 win.
The girls compete in Orange County today for the second round of the CIF playoffs.
“The girls have done well and have only lost twice,” coach Joe Ciasulli said.
