As long as senior Kyle Brown has a board, he’s in the water. He is a co-surf captain along with senior Jordan Wible.

Brown began to surf in sixth grade, joining the Costa surf team as a freshman. According to Brown, once he started surfing he was unable to stop. He spends every day surfing as long as there are waves to ride. He spends at least an hour a day in the water.

“It’s a really fun thing to do,” Brown said. “Competitive surfing definitely taught me perseverance.”

Surfing has been a huge part of Brown’s life and becoming team captain has given him new responsibilities. He has to help coaches with judging rounds where surfers go head to head in competition. In addition to that, he has to mentally and physically support his teammates to the best of his ability to help them improve their surfing skills.

“Kyle is such a gifted kid,” surf coach Mr. Geller said. “He’s a great surfer and he isn’t a bragger.”

A large part of Brown’s surfing for the Costa team involves Wible. According to Wible, they motivate each other with their leadership and growth as athletes.

“Kyle is one of the hardest working surfers I know,” Wible said. “Out of the four years that I’ve known him he works so hard and he shows it by his performance in the water. He is always the first one in the parking lot at the beach ready to go every morning.”

Throughout his years surfing, Brown finds that his inspiration is local surfer Matt Pagan. Pagan surfs for Body Glove, and he trains in Huntington Beach. Brown has surfed with Pagan for three years. He has played a large role in Brown’s life.

“Kyle is a great kid and he.has such a raw, aggressive surfing approach,” Pagan said. “When I first surfed with him, he was going pedal to the floor trying big airs and the last time I saw him, he was landing them with style. Kyle is a great surfer and even greater person. He’s got a bright future in whatever he sets his heart on.”

After high school Brown plans to go to college to surf, as well as travel and make videos. He aims to continue doing contests to progress as a surfer.

“He’s always been pretty encouraging and helpful out in the water in the mornings,” senior teammate Jacob Reed said. “He always has a positive attitude about getting out there even when the waves are small.”

Costa’s surf team has been undefeated for a long time. With the surf season approaching, Brown and Wible are confident that the team will remain successful, as they have worked hard to remain the best.

“I just want to progress, I know our team is undefeated and I’m looking forward to this year,” Brown said.
