Costa defeats the Marymount Sailors in their second CIF game

Although the girls volleyball team fell to Marymount earlier in the season, the Mustangs had the opportunity to get even with the Sailors in their second round of CIF. Girls volleyball defeated Marymount High School in their second CIF match on Nov. 14 in four sets.

Costa got off to a slow start in the first set, but were able to keep the game close. The Mustangs were down 6-5, but with the help of senior setter Sammy Furlan, who had 41 assists in total, they took a 17-11 lead. Costa continued to play aggressively and won the first set, 25-14.

“We were all so excited because we knew what we were capable of,” junior outside hitter Katrina Kernochan said. “We were able to pull off a win in the first set.”

Costa started off the second set with a lead of 9-4, thanks to junior outside hitter Skylar Caputo, who had 15 kills in the game. With a couple more great plays, Costa increased their lead to 17-8. Finally, Costa finished the second set with a crushing win, with a score of 25-16.

“After beating a team as talented as Marymount in the first two games, we knew we needed to go hard and come out strong in the third set to win.” junior middle blocker Katie Rethmeyer said.

In the third set, both teams came out strong and neither team could find the momentum to pull away. Costa began with an early lead of 5-4, but in the middle of the set, the Sailors the lead, 14-13. With a series of runs, the Sailors stole the game, winning the set, 25-19.

“After losing the third game from coming off of two really good games prior, we just knew that we had to calm down and go back to what we pride ourselves on, our passing and defense,” senior outside hitter Lan Nguyen said. “We had a lot of fire because it was an opportunity to beat Marymount, something we haven’t done in several years.”

The fourth set was the closest set of all. It was a great battle full of momentum and lots of energy. Costa came out to an early lead of 5-4, but it did not take long for the Sailors to gain the lead. With a couple of great sets and spikes, the Sailors took a lead 14-13 over the Mustangs. The Mustangs played to a 25-21 win in the fourth set, winning the match 3-1. 150 Costa fans stormed the court with the volleyball team.

“We knew that we lost to them are first game of the season and we just wanted to prove that we were better than them and we wanted it more.” sophomore defensive specialist Emma Smith said.

“We had the mindset to play fearlessly and have all the energy we could possibly have,” Caputo said. “We knew we would have the support to make our dream came true.”
