Mira Costa’s Mustang Morning News staff members traveled to Boston from Nov. 14-17 to attend the Journalism Educators Association and National Scholastic Press Association Fall High School Journalism Convention, where they received 13 awards for their excellence in the broadcast news field.

The convention is an annual awards ceremony that honors student-run news and broadcast programs from places across the world. Costa’s awards included Online Pacemaker, Story of the Year and Best Bi-Weekly News in the nation.

“We don’t go to the convention just for the competition,” MMN advisor Michael Hernandez said. “The primary goal is to learn a lot from other advisors and professionals in the seminars, meet students from other schools around the country and bond as a staff.”

About 25 crew members from the MMN crew traveled to Boston, including students from Advanced Broadcast Journalism and Broadcast Journalism 1-2.

“It really put in perspective how good the Mustang Morning News is,” news member junior Natalie Hoag said. “It was so cool to win the award and finally see all of our hard work pay off. I hope that we can keep it up and be recognized again next year.”

In addition to the awards, every story that was submitted by MMN scored “Superior,” which is the highest ranking awarded at the conference.

“We have previously been finalists in this particular competition four times, so to finally win was extremely gratifying,” Hernandez said.

In previous years, MMN has travelled to other cities, such as Minneapolis, Kansas City, San Antonio and Washington, D.C to attend the same convention.

“I was really excited to travel to Boston for this year’s convention,” news member senior Julia Arciga said. “The overall feeling of the city and the wide variety of colleges that the East Coast can offer are so exciting and intersting. It has definitely been one of the most exciting places we have traveled to.”
