Many Costa students waited in the mile long lines with chaotic shoppers to capitalize on the once a year Black Friday sales on Nov. 29.
Black Friday is an annual day after Thanksgiving where stores hold enormous sales to kick off the Christmas season and help shoppers to finish their Christmas shopping early and cheap.
“Black Friday helped me save money and force me to buy Christmas gifts early and get it over with,” Mira Costa biology teacher Pamela Manago said.
Stores all across the country participate in Black Friday sales. Shoppers everywhere go to the stores to save money on gifts on their Christmas lists despite the crowds.
“The lines were bigger than usual and there were a lot of people in the store,” sophomore Domenic Devico said. “It was worth it to wait and get the things I needed.”
Besides the sales, Black Friday offers shoppers a chance to finish all their gift shopping in one day according to junior Adam Fox. Because everyone is looking to save money, most Black Friday shoppers come and continually crossing items off their lists.
“That’s what’s nice about Black Friday, I get both my Hanukkah and Christmas shopping done,” Fox said. “Now that I’m older, I’m more humble about my list so it goes by faster.”
According to azfamily.com, it is very popular for shoppers to come up with strategies such as collecting coupons and spending nights plotting to score a better deal. The strategies help shoppers avoid chaos while purchasing items during Black Friday.
“My strategy is to get in the lines earlier,” Fox said. “Go to the most important things to buy on my list and then work my way down from there.”
According to The Boston Globe, instead of going to the stores and waiting in lines, many people have decided to do their shopping online where the stores hold the same deals. Local stores such as Macy’s and Target have the same sales online as they do in the store.
“I used to be the person who was up at five am at the crazy stores,” Manago said. “I just started online shopping last year and didn’t have to go to the stores for extra items until ten.”
According to Wikipedia, online shopping offers people to stay in the comfort of their own home and buy the items they want. Shoppers can have the products delivered straight to their doorstep and don’t have to go to the store.
“Online shopping is great because it’s fast and super easy,” online shopper, junior Kohei New said. “I like it because I don’t have to leave my couch.”
Black Friday has been around for many years and according to Wikipedia has a reputation of being a dangerous event. This day as a kick off to Christmas and keep the spirit of this day alive.
“I go every year with my family,” junior Black Friday shopper Chris Pham said. “It’s the best sale of the year and is just very fun and chaotic to be a part of.”
According to Macy’s employees, stores such as Target and Macy’s have begun to open early on Thanksgiving night to allow customers a better shot at the sales. People were said to be waiting outside the stores to get the first pick of items and deals.
“This year we did open on Thanksgiving night at eight pm,” Sunglass Hut employee Griciela Bailey said. “We had about eighty people waiting outside the mall and all the stores open had very good business.”
