Various groups from all walks of campus came together to get their groove on in order to participate in Mira Costa dance team’s annual Lip Sync and show off their talents in dancing, singing and entertaining.
The dance team held the Lip Sync on Nov. 18 at 7 p.m. in the Costa auditorium in order to fundraise money for competition fees, costumes and other utilities for the team.
Teachers as well as students of all grade levels performed and participated at the Lip Sync. “Hoofpimps” by Yearbook, “End of Time” by junior Doreen Forson and “MashUp” by Model United Nations were a few of the wide variety of groups that performed that night. Even Mira Costa teachers Kelly Donovan, Daniel Debevec and Karl Kurtz’s group Special Guest performed to the tune of Miley Cyrus’ “Wrecking Ball.”
Sophomores Rachel Kay and Julia Sheth and junior Kalena Tamura took the stage by storm and won first place with their energetic hip-hop dance routine to the song “Why Don’t You Love Me” by Beyonce.
“This was my second year performing at Lip Sync,” Kay said. “I am really excited that we won first place this year. After watching the Golden Oreos, we were all really scared that we weren’t going to win. I am really honored and happy that we won.”
The Golden Oreos, composed of juniors Carson Boden, Chris Pham, Gunner Robinson, Scott Schaffer and Nick Vu, practiced diligently twice a week for a total of four weeks and came in second place at Lip Sync. Their hard work led them to the sucess of winning $100 for their well-coordinated performance. On top of their second place title, they also received the award for the best costume.
“I was really excited when they called our name for second place,” Boden said. “We put in a lot of hard work and effort, but since I had never seen any of the Lip Sync performances from the previous years, I was not sure how we would pull through, especially after seeing all the admirable performances by the other groups go before us. We thought that everyone did such a really good job, and I am really glad that we were able to win two awards.”
Associated Student Body fourth period received third place and won the $50 award with “Process of Lip Sync.” They also won “Best Organization.” ASB 5th period came in 4th place with its performance, “We Do.”
“I think the performance went well,” sophomore Cole Keefer said. “We put a lot of effort and preparation into it, and I feel like it all really paid off in the end.”
The MCHS dance team opened and closed the Lip Sync with two routines, “Move Your Body” and “Way Back Wednesday.” The dance team was able to sell 40 more tickets than it did the previous year.
“As one of the captains, my job was to give out the assignment sheets for each girl,” said co-captain senior Ashley Goussak. “As a team, we put a lot of effort into planning the event, and everyone on the team was really involved throughout the whole process. As a whole, we were all really happy with the turn out. It was great to see that all of the groups were really enthusiastic in their performances, which made the night that much more enjoyable for everyone. I hope the team is as successful next year.”
