After a promising regular season performance in Bay League, Costa’s football season came to a close on Nov. 22.
In the Mustangs’ last game of the year, they lost to Saugus High School, 13-0, in the second round of the California Interscholastic Federation playoffs. Four fumbles by the Mustangs contributed to their defeat.
“In the second half we played well, but you cannot win a game like that and fumble the ball the way we did,” junior lineman Michael Holliday said. “We put up a good effort, but it was not our night.”
Costa defeated Highland High School in the first round of CIF on Nov. 15, winning 34-6, led by a dominating performance from senior running back Sebastian Franck-Love.
“We executed our plays well,” Franck-Love said. “We knew Highland had good speed and we worried a little about that, but we played through it, and it did not affect us.”
In the final Bay League game of the season, Costa faced its rival Redondo, claiming a 35-0 victory. Senior wide receiver Harrison Morrow had two receiving touchdowns, along with a passing touchdown. Senior running back Brandon Mills also contributed to the win with a 68-yard touchdown run, off of an interception.
“The game went well,” coach Don Morrow said. “We stopped their running game, and their defense could not stop our offense. We did well, and we could not have asked to play better.”
In the Oct. 11 Fox Sports West high school game of the week, the Mustangs defeated West High School, 28-21.
“We played great for the first half,” sophomore quarterback Jacob Silvera said. “They came back, but we pulled out with the win on our Homecoming night.”
The Mustangs finished with a 4-1 record in Bay League and an 8-4 record overall.
“We had a good season this year overall,” Silvera said. “It is too bad we did not win it for the seniors, but there is always next year.”
