More than 120 Manhattan Beach Unified School District permit students from the Los Angeles Unified School District will be allowed to return to the district next year after much speculation, allowing the MBUSD to retain approximately $500,000.
Originally, the LAUSD school board had planned to revise its inter-district transfer policy, so 80 percent of their permit students would return to the district.
“This news is fantastic for permit students because they won’t have to switch schools, which can be hard,” Principal Julie Ruisinger said.
MBUSD parent Lynda Karr Mitsakos brought together over 500 parents of students with permits to address their grievances to the LAUSD school board.
“Revenue-wise this is really great news,” Ruisinger said. “Each student we retain earns the district about $5,200 each year.”
The retention of over 120 students will raise projected revenue, and will likely spur changes in legislation for the future.
“We should probably discuss the permit issue and decide if legislation is necessary to avoid future situations like this,” Superintendent Dr. Beverly Rohrer said.
