A Costa orchestra member, loaded with a backpack filled with books and a viola strapped to his back, returns to campus after a long winter break. Hoping to unload the weight in a locker, he finds the entire middle section of the Costa campus blocked off, including his beloved band hall.
After winter break, the band locker hall was under construction, as part of Phase III of Measure BB, forcing a large population of band and orchestra students to seek alternative ways of dealing with their belongings while at school.
To address the problem, Costa’s Associated Student Body launched a successful social media campaign to help provide affected students with places to store their instruments and books until a more permanent solution was found.
“The fact that we had so many volunteers to share lockers with band students proves that we have a selfless student body that is willing to come together to help one another in times of need,” ASB President senior Kirk La said.
The temporary band and orchestra room is located at the far corner of campus in the small gym, and with the escalated construction, students are having issues getting there on time.
“It took six and a half minutes to get from the administration building with no traffic,” band director Joel Carlson said. “It’s a problem that we lose a couple of minutes, but we have still been having great rehearsals.”
The Costa administration ordered new lockers on Jan. 8. According to administrators, it should take two weeks for the new lockers to be delivered and one more week after the delivery to install them. Until then, students are thankful for the places that fellow students have provided to keep their supplies.
“I feel like it is the only good thing to come out of this,” senior Tony Nguyen said. “The fact that we as a community support each other in times of need, to give to those who are in circumstances they cannot control, is truly a wonderful thing.”
