Editor’s Note: Mid-Way Day offers opportunity to explore new interests

When I first heard that Costa was planning the 2nd-annual Mid-Way Day, my initial thought was how to convince my mom to let me skip school. But on second glance, Costa’s effort to attempt to create a multifaceted student body, while providing a relaxing break after finals, is a highly respectable gesture.

Finals can be the most stressful time of the year for Mira Costa students, studying to all ends to the night and hoping they get enough sleep to function the next morning. But with Costa’s implementation of Mid-Way Day on Tuesday, students were able to receive a much-needed break from the stress and anxieties of a typical school day. I applaud Mira Costa’s attempt to ease students’ post-finals tension.

Mid-Way Day not only provides kids with a relaxing and entertaining day, but allows students to dive into their personal interests and explore others’ passions. With modern schooling focused on mathematical equations and analyzing past American literature, Mid-Way allows students to explore their interests outside of Costa’s usual curriculum.

With classes such as Zumba, Abnormal Psychology and Guided Meditation, Mid- Way Day provides insight into multiple areas of study, shaping Costa students into well-rounded individuals.

As students create their own classes and lesson plans, Mid-Way Day encourages students to act as leaders in teaching roles. It offers students perspective into their educators’ lives and enables them to have an understanding of what it is like to be at the front of the class.

Some students may see Mid-Way Day as an opportunity to ditch a “pointless” day of school, but when you take a closer look at the administration’s intentions, it is something to be commended. The intent of Mid- Way Day is to not only expand a student’s repertoire of knowledge but aid students in becoming school leaders and powerful individuals in the Mira Costa community.

As a student at Mira Costa, I hope that the student body followed the administrative lead and took full value out of the event, as I would be thrilled to see a 3rd- annual Mid-Way Day.
