Students and teachers shared their various passions through self-created classes on Tuesday for Costa’s second annual Mid-Way Day, formerly May Day.

Participating instructors created classes based on their personal interests and taught them to fellow peers. Forty-nine classes, in either 45 or 90-minute blocks, were held throughout the minimum day.

“It is a day where we are able to showcase the students’ talents rather than just focusing on reading, writing and arithmetic,” Costa Vice Principal Deborah Hofreiter said.

Prior to the date, those who taught their own classes attended a one-hour session to go over logistics and prepare the instructors for the day.
“The administration wanted to show the student-teachers that they had improved the class selection system and that they are taking the classes more seriously,” junior Carson Boden said. “I thought that the system was better than last year.”

This year, the administration chose to move the day to the middle of the school year, as opposed to the end of the year. Additionally, students were able to sign up prior to the date through the program SignUp Genius, instead of the morning of.

“Everyone hated the paper sign-up last year,” Hofreiter said. “We listened to the feedback, and we thought that SignUp Genius would allow people to choose their classes more easily.”

After success last year, students chose to teach the same classes, such as song-writing and extreme sports.

“It was cool to see all the people who were also interested in what we were teaching,” junior Alexandra Mier Y Telan said. “I liked hearing other people’s opinions and attending other classes.”

Most of the classes taught this year were at full capacity. Students who did not sign up for courses beforehand watched movies in the auditorium.

“I think Mid-Way Day went about 100 percent better than last year,” Hofreiter said. “The classes I attended were phenomenal. Some of the kids who were teaching could teach our teachers how to teach better.”
