Two juniors on the Mira Costa girls soccer team plan to prove their skills at the Division I level.
Forward McKenna Doyle and goalie Nonie Frishette recentely committed to Boston University and Wake Forest, respectively.
Both girls began the process of recruitment months ago by contacting various coaches. As competitive club soccer players, they competed in showcases and tournaments that college scouts often attend.
“I began reaching out to schools very early because I always knew I wanted to play soccer in college,” Doyle said.
Doyle began the recruitment process as a sophomore, writing letters to schools, such as Brown and Berkeley, and inviting them to tournaments to watch her play. Over the summer, she attended the Boston University Soccer Identification Camp, where coaches watched her play for five days. At the end of the camp, she received an invite for an unofficial visit to the campus.
“During the visit, I was given the offer to play at BU,” Doyle said, “I was so excited and committed three days later.”
Frishette went through a similar recruiting process. After emailing collegiate coaches, Wake Forest responded and watched her play in North Carolina in November.
“Wake Forest told me they were interested, and I committed a week later,” Frishette said.
Doyle chose BU not only for its Division I soccer program but also for its successful business school.
“Boston has always been my first choice because of its soccer program and academics,” Doyle said.
Aside from athletics, academics played a vital role when it came to choosing a college for Frishette. According to Frishette, Wake Forest has a prestigious sports medicine program and competitive soccer program, which will help her achieve her goal of playing for the national team.
“Wake Forest is a really great fit all around,” Frishette said. “I love the team there.”
Doyle and Frishette have been playing club soccer together for less than a year but have played on the Costa varsity team since freshman year. Frishette said that she depends on Doyle to create scoring opportunities. Doyle believes Frishette is a supportive teammate and talented goalie.
“I am very excited to have the opportunity to play the sport I love in college,” Frishette said.
