Kelley resigns as coach

Four-year Mira Costa girls golf coach Tim Kelley stepped down from his position on Dec. 20, forcing the golf program to search for a new coach.

According to Kelley, the reason for his resignation is to focus on his family. He has been coaching varsity girls golf for the past three years, starting in 2010 as the junior varsity coach. Kelley won Coach of the Year for the CIF Southern Section and also won Coach of the Year for Bay League this year.

“I got married last year and want to put my family first,” Kelley said. “I’m unsure if I’ll go back to coaching in the future.”

Kelley believes his break from coaching will not change his devotion to teaching math or the game of golf.

“I will continue to work hard and improve because the new technology in the classroom is not my natural strength,” Kelley said.

Members of the team believe his absence will affect the team’s performance after winning a CIF championship.

“He helped build the team to its best,” senior Samantha Pulido said. “Hopefully, our reputation stays as prestigious without him.”

According to Costa’s Athletic Director Jaime Mancilla, boys golf coaches Thomas Cox and Ryan Branning are interested in coaching.

“We’re hoping to have a new coach by next fall,” Mancilla said.
