Mira Costa’s annual Homecoming dance will be held in the gym on Saturday, Oct. 9 at 7 p.m. following Costa Spirit, week which will take place on Oct.4-9.
Student Government has planned dress up days for Spirit Week, which will be the week of Oct. 4: Monday is flannels, Tuesday is sports teams, Wednesday is pajama-rama, Thursday is Patriot Day, and Friday is Stampede clothing (green and gold). Associated Student Body’s main goal is to get the students involved in pre-homecoming festivities.
“I believe that student government chose broad and general enough topics that we all can join in on, and I hope there will be a lot of effort and participation put into this year’s spirit week,” said Mira Costa President Iktae Park.
The tradition of homecoming at Mira Costa is being continued by the ASB by attracting people to the thrilling Homecoming football game on Oct. 8 against Newport Beach. Tickets for the dance are being sold from Sept. 28 to Oct. 2, and from Oct. 4-9.
During the game’s half-time, a video will be played about the Homecoming courts, the marching band will be performing, and a fireworks show is also set to happen. A pep rally will take place the afternoon of the football game, along with teachers playing games at lunch.
“I feel that that the fireworks and fun activities that ASB has worked so hard for to provide the students with will make this year’s Homecoming the best yet. The fireworks are always what people look forward to, and hopefully the Costa student body will come out and support our football team,” said sophomore Danielle Kay, a student government representative.
This year, several new actions are taking place to encourage the student body to take part in Spirit Week. Last year in homeroom, a survey was distributed about ASB events such as dances and participation in dress-up days.
Costa students identified the reason that they did not attend school functions were because they didn’t know when they were going on. This year, student government plans to model all Spirit Week’s dress-up days on the Mustang Morning News, so the students have a clear idea about when and what to wear.
“Hopefull,y modeling the spirit week outfits on the Mustang Morning News will encourage students to participate in the dress-up days, because as seen in the survey given out last year, people did not participate because they didn’t know when the dress-up days were occurring. I believe that spreading the word and publicizing spirit week will increase participation at Costa, which is our main goal” said Thea Jaucian, commissioner of campus morale.
There has also been a new incentive program to get more students to participate in school spirit. On each day, a representative from ASB will count how many people dressed up in each class. The class with the most participants will receive a prize.
“We have asked the teachers and I can only hope that this incentive program will improve our lacking spirit. We have an API score of 898, and we are one of the best schools in the state if not the country, and we should be more enthusiastic about how great we actually are,” said Lisa Claypoole, student government director.
