Scoring two hat-tricks in a single game, the Mira Costa boys lacrosse team maintained a strong lead over Santa Monica High School at home on Friday.

The Mustangs defeated the Vikings, 18-7, improving their overall record to 5-1. Senior attack Jake Provencher and junior attack Joe Rosenberg were the highest scorers, each contributing four goals.

“Santa Monica has had a strong club program in years past,” coach Aaron Karsh said. “This was their first year as a CIF team, but I was very happy with how we played overall.”

Costa started off ahead, scoring 12 goals in the first half and only letting up three.

“We needed to continued playing great defense in the second half to maintain a lead,” sophomore attack Zane Crandall said. “We also needed to attack the defense for more opportunities.”

Costa took advantage of Santa Monica, with the score at 12-3 at the end of the first. The Vikings struggled to come back, scoring four goals in the half. The Mustangs retaliated with six goals of their own, ending the game with a Costa win of 18-7.

The boys will play again today away at 3:30 p.m. against Peninsula High school.

“We have a real shot at doing some great things this year if we can continue to develop and play as a team throughout the season.” Karsh said.
