Hermosa Beach held its seventh annual Spyder surf festival on April 5 at the Hermosa Pier.

Monster Energy Drink presented the festival, which consisted of live band performances, fashion shows, games and giveaways throughout the day.

“I like how much stuff they give away and it’s a really good atmosphere with the live music and all the games that were going on,” sophomore Kyle Elliot said.

The live music consisted of Hoist The Colors, Kevin Sousa featuring Sand Section, and Fallen Riviera.

“I thought it was a good choice of bands because the music was very upbeat which fit the atmosphere,” Elliot said. “One of the bands leads singer was the leader of ‘Keep Hermosa Hermosa’ which seemed to entertain the crowd.”

This year the LA Surf Awards given to those who influenced surf history the most, which included Mike Balzer, Alex Gray, Bob Hurley and Ted Robinson

“We think that there’s so much successful surf going on in the Los Angeles area that isn’t being recognized,” Spyder managing partner Richard O’Reilly said. “It was time to make some awards of our own.”

According to Spyder, they estimate that a crowd of ten thousand people showed up throughout the day.

“We had a lot more people show up earlier this year,” O’Reilly said. “It was pretty successful with all the free stuff the crowds got to walk away with each year.”
