Imagine being able to be worry free and doing all your favorite hobbies for the rest of your life. That time to retire has come for Frida Shamburt, the quiet lady working the attendance office, whose last day is officially on January 31st.
“I am very excited to be retiring,” Shamburt said. “Hopefully they find someone to replace me before my last day.”
Frida is put in charge of many responsibilities such as parking problems, answering questions for students and parents, off grounds passes and lost and found. She helps the front office and other faculty to better manage the students throughout the year by clearing the students problems.
“She just kind of does it all over there and makes our jobs easier,” guidance officer Peggy Froseth said.
Shamburt has been working at Mira Costa for seven years at the attendance office. She also served as a one on one special education teacher for 10 years at Meadows Elementary School.
“I would walk with them as a one on one teacher,” Shamburt said. “I helped this one little girl in kindergarten who was autistic and I stopped in second grade, but I helped other kids too.”
She no longer needs the money to live and pay for her expenses, like most people retiring. All her work over the years, has finally paid off for her and her husband.
“We refinanced our home and they told us that they didn’t need my pay to qualify,” Shamburt said. “So my husband said you don’t need to work anymore which is why I’m retiring early.”
Mira Costa is going to hold interviews through the next week and already have one or two people lined up for the job. They hope to find someone to replace her before Shamburt’s last day, January 31st.
“Right now they are interviewing for the position,” Peggy Froseth said. “They should be interviewing and hiring hopefully over the next week or so and will hopefully find a person before she leaves.”
She clears people’s workloads and worries. Frida works in the window next to the front office and is very convenient to access and talk to.
“Frida always made clearing attendance and receiving off grounds passes easy and quick. You could go down and she would be understanding and sweet, making sure that your absence was cleared or that you received your off grounds pass,” sophomore Steve Sandoval said. “She will be missed.”
Students express concern about what the new attendance office employee will be like.
“It’s sad that someone like her is leaving us. I hope we don’t have a mean replacement,” sophomore Arturo Mares said. “She was a nice lady and she was excellent at her work.”
