Track and field finish on top in Bay League

The Mira Costa track and field team finished strong in Bay League this year when the boys came in first for the fifth year in a row and the girls came in second in their meet against West Torrance High School last Thursday.

Junior Emma Lautanen won the 1600 meter run at 50.20 second while senior Juliana Loiola won the 100 meter hurdles at 16.26 seconds. Freshman Shante Robinson broke the 100 meter sprint record with a time of 12.27 seconds and she also won the 200 meter dash. Senior Kimi Markley placed first in the long jump and triple jump while freshman Emily Jones won the 800 meter run with a time of 2:25. The girls won the 4×100 meter relay and senior Chelsea Tatum finished the meet, placing first in the discus throw.

“Costa is always very focused when it comes to Bay League,” Loiola said. “The entire team got harder workout assignments two days before the meet that highlighted how we should be performing. It was challenging, but we went in prepared.”

The boys won the 4×100 meter relay as well. Senior Nikko Pappas secured first place in the 1600 meter run and senior Joshua Block won the 400 meter dash. Junior Chance Weston won the 800 meter dash at 2:05 and senior Robert McMahon dominated the hurdles when he won the 110 meter and 300 meter. Senior Matt Wenner won the high jump at 5’10” and junior Daniel Johnson won the men’s pole vault at 12’6”. The meet ended for the boys when senior Chris Fong won the triple jump and senior Brandon Mills placed first in shot put.

“Everyone worked really hard this meet,” junior Sophie Haas-Goldberg said. “It was the last Bay League Meet so they wanted to end on a good note and they definitely pulled it off.”

The Mustangs have closed out their Bay League team competition, however, a group of athletes will compete in the Bay League Preliminaries at Redondo Union tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
