The Manhattan Beach Unified School District recently named Costa Building Trades Specialist and Auditorium Manager Cary Jordahl Employee of the Year for the 2013-2014 school year.
Jordahl has an expansive job, which includes being the facility manager for Costa’s auditorium, teaching a theater technology class and assisting in the audio-visual work for any performance based art at Costa.
“A lot of people are really nervous when they come into the auditorium and have to speak in front of all of these people, and I like to calm them down and let them know that I’ll take care of them and that everything is ok,” Jordahl said.
Costa Principal Dr. Ben Dale decided to surprise Jordahl with the news, telling him that there was a problem with the auditorium that required his assistance. When Jordahl came by the office to inquire further, Dale announced that he had won employee of the year.
“Without Jordahl, all of the programs that use the auditorium wouldn’t have anyone to help them with working the school’s technology,” band member and junior Rebecca Bacich said. “He deserves recognition for all of the important, behind-the-scenes work that he does.”
According to Jordahl, his favorite part of his job is bring helpful and allowing his expertise to help people, especially in his extracurricular work with drama and the theater technician kids.
Jordahl also provides assistance to the choir and band programs, helping them with lighting and staging for all of their big performances.
“Jordahl is an extremely hard worker who is in the auditorium way before school, and long after school,” Choir student and junior Alexandra Miery-Teran said. “He’s incredibly dedicated to all of the programs he assists, and goes above and beyond what’s expected of him.”
