By Maddie Coate Sports Editor In a fight to advance to the second round of the California Interscholastic Federation playoffs, the Costa boys tennis team defeated Calabasas at home on Wednesday. The Mustangs clinched an 11-7 win, improving their overall record to 12-8-1 while finishing Bay League with a 6-2 record. In the first round, the doubles duo of sophomores Blake and Tanner Suard won 6-0. The doubles team of Jeremy Chung and Mason Zisette as well as freshman singles player Bobby Sillman also won their matches, 6-1. Junior Evan Han played a close match that ended in a 7-6 (7-5) tie-breaker win. “We played more aggressively and closed at the net to get the win,” Suard said. Costa held a 4-2 lead going into the second round of matches. Sophomore singles player Alex Gaal and the doubles team of senior Zak Vand and junior Jason Wu both shut out Calabasas, 6-0. Chung and Zisette also won, 6-3. The Mustangs maintained a lead, entering the third set when Han had a shut-out win, 6-0. The Suards also advanced Costa’s lead with a 6-1 victory. Vand and Wu won their last match, 6-4. Costa’s match ended when Gaal pulled out a close final 7-5 (7-2) win. He got off to a strong start in the tie-breaker, winning the first six points. “I felt confident going into the last match and played really aggressively,” Gaal said. “I held my serve to get into the seven point tie-break.” The Mustangs will face off against Northwood High School away in the second round of CIF playoffs today at 3 p.m. “The next round will be tough, like this match was,” Han said.
