Going into the first round of CIF, the Mira Costa girls lacrosse team knew its opponents well. It had split its previous two Bay League games with El Segundo, including a 14-13 triple overtime loss. The team was looking to finish 2-1 against its Bay League rivals and advance to the second round of CIF.
On May 6, the Mustangs fell to the Eagles, 12-7, bringing an end to their season in which they were 5-9 overall, 2-6 in Bay League and 0-1 in CIF.
Senior wing Ashley Duncan led the Mustangs in scoring with three goals. Behind her was junior defenseman Sabrina Pickett, who contributed one goal.
“We were never able to click and get momentum going like we usually do,” sophomore midfielder Kayla Sugimoto said. “Because of this, we were unable to get the win and advance to the next round.”
El Segundo dominated the first half and held the Mustangs to only three goals going into halftime, 6-3. The second half was the same, as El Segundo continued to dominate the Mustangs and went on to win the game, 12-7.
“Each and every one of us played with intensity and passion,” Duncan said. “But we were unable to recover, which resulted in our downfall.”
