Mira Costa Associated Student Body hosts annual UCLA blood drive

The Associated Student Body held the biannual University of California, Los Angeles Blood Drive on June 3 and 4 in Fisher gym.

About 200 students donated one pint of blood each to benefit the UCLA Blood and Platelet Center.

“The Blood Drive was a great way to get over my fear of needles and so do something good for other people,” junior Nicki Durazo said. “It felt good knowing that my small donation can save a lot of lives.”

For over 15 years the Mira Costa Associated Student Body has held a one-day blood drive in the fall where they collect blood donations from about 130 students and a two-day spring blood drive where about 240 students donate.

“We like to hold a larger blood drive later in the year because more students turn 16 and meet the minimum age requirement,” Claypoole said. “It is important that students start donating blood at a young age so they will continue for the rest of their lives.”

Ten doctors and nurses from the UCLA Blood and Platelet Center participated in the drive. The UCLA Blood and Platelet Center was opened in 1975 and is now responsible for maintaining a blood supply for patients at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center and Santa Monica UCLA Medical Center and Orthopaedic Hospital.

“Doing blood drives at the high school level is important because it gives you a good sense of community when everyone is helping save lives together,” UCLA doctor Oscar Rosero said. “I get to meet great students and help lots of people at the same time.”
