Six Costa students will launch themselves into the science world like rockets going into outer space by interning at the aerospace company Boeing this summer.
Boeing offers California high school students the opportunity to intern in the math and science or engineering industries for eight weeks at their El Segundo office. Costa juniors Ryan Cosner, Matthew O’Brien, Bram Osterhout, Amy Shan, Garrett Ung, and Nicholas Vu will be interns at the aerospace company during this summer.
“I want to be an engineer, so I thought this internship was a great way to get me started,” O’Brien said. “I also think that this program will help me receive a taste of the industry.”
While at Boeing, student interns will complete individual projects related to their particular areas of study. Cosner and Shan will study material science and engineering, O’Brien and Vu will study electrical engineering, and Osterhout and Ung will study ground systems engineering.
“I think that this is an amazing opportunity to see what engineering is truly like,” O’Brien said. “Hopefully, I will get some valuable experience that will help me in college and beyond.”
Interns will brainstorm potential ways to improve different aspects of Boeing, such as the company’s advertising, alongside the mentors who will aid them in researching and acclimating to the internship.
“I look forward to learning about matlab, a programming tool, to understand how it’s utilized in the structure of a satellite,” Vu said.
In order to qualify for the Boeing internships, applicants must maintain a GPA of at least 3.5, take at least one Advance Placement math or science class, and have two letters of recommendation from math or science teachers. These interns will work from June 20 until Aug. 9.
“I would strongly recommend this program to people who are interested in engineering,” Vu said. “Anyone who is good at math and science would find this program beneficial.”
